The Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) has received a set-back as National Thermal Power Corporation has shut down one unit each of Unchahaar Thermal Plant (210 MW) and Rihand Thermal Plant (500 MW) for Annual Maintenance for one month despite the peak demand of power in the region. PSEB sources said that Punjab is losing its share of 16LUs per day from these plants. Further NTPC has not been able to arrange full quantum of gas for Anta, Auria and Dadri power stations (500 MW). PSEB is being offered power on liquid fuel with Naptha and Diesel at Rs 12 per unit. PSEB is taking its share of 50 MW from these plants only in emergencies. Meanwhile, PSEB has managed to get additional 19 lakh of units from Rajasthan SLDC. Board has already started getting 24 lakh units of power from Madhya Pradesh after the matter was taken up with Vaish, MD of Madhya Pradesh Power Trading Company on Monday. These arrangements would reduce the gap between demand and supply to a great extent and provide further relief to the consumers from power cuts. When contacted YS Ratra, confirmed and said that PSEB is fully aware about the hardships being faced by the consumers and is making earnest efforts to arrange additional power from various sources. Meanwhile, the demand of power has fallen from 1,871 LUs on July 30 (maximum recorded so far) to around 1,550 LUs owing to good rainfall in major parts of Punjab including Patiala, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Ferozepur and Ludhiana areas
